So how did the Teddy Bear get it’s name?

It all started in the year 1902, when US President Roosevelt, took a hunting trip in Mississippi via an invitation from their Governor. As the story goes, President Roosevelt refused to shoot a bear that had been captured by his hosts. He felt it was unsportsmanlike to shoot a bear that was already tied up and injured. Because of this, a political cartoonist published in the Washington Post on November 16, 1902 a drawing of the incident. As the years past, this same cartoonist added and altered the bear to other drawings and publications he associated with President Roosevelt and inadvertently created the connection.

Later a candy shop owner put two stuffed bears in his shop window, and with permission from President Roosevelt, called these toy bears “Teddy’s bears”. Which later became “Teddy Bears”

I love the story behind the name and I have to admit, I still have some special bears I’ll never part with!

  1. I have a Gund teddy bear that my very best friend gave me before I left for college. I put pins on it during my college years to remind me of events. That teddy bear now sits on my daughter’s bed!

  2. Oh, I think these are adorable. I’m in my early/mid-30s, and part of me would still really love to get a new teddy bear. A really plush, soft one! …Hey, it’s not weird at all– just think of it as being like a sort of throw pillow! 😉
